Smartology appoints Advisory Board

Smartology is delighted to announce the launch of their Advisory Board. This brings together a team of senior industry players with expertise in the marketing, communications, publishing and technology sectors in both London and New York.
The Advisory Board chaired by Sally Costerton (ex Hill & Knowlton, currently ICANN) comprises of Chris Townsend CBE (ex Sky, DCMS, KPMG), Fred Schuster (ex WPP, IPG), Rachel Tuffney (ex Wall Street Journal, Dianomi), Patrick Falconer (ex New York Times) and David McMurtrie (ex Google).
Working closely with our CEO Mark Bembridge and CPTO Marcus Keane, their extensive experience across sales, marketing, PR and product development disciplines unlocks immense value to support Smartology’s international growth during 2025.
Meet the board

Sally Costerton
Chair of Advisory Board
Sally has extensive experience running communications agencies including over a decade at Hill & Knowlton, latterly as CEO EMEA. Moving into the Internet community in 2012, she has built stakeholder engagement programmes around the world and has spent the last two years as interim CEO of ICANN. An experienced Board Director, Sally has consulted across several early stage technology companies on communications and market strategy and coached many senior women into leadership roles.

Chris Townsend CBE
Advisory Board Member
With 25 years of board-level experience, Chris specialises in leading major digital and business transformation projects across the public and private sectors. An active investor in seven UK tech startups, he brings strategic insight into scaling innovation. Formerly a senior partner at KPMG and CEO of Broadband Delivery UK at DCMS, he has led multi-billion-pound initiatives, including Commercial Director and Marketing Director roles at Chelsea FC, BSkyB and the London 2012 Olympics. Chris has been awarded a CBE for his role as CEO of the UK Government’s Shielding Programme during the Covid-19 pandemic and an OBE for raising £2.4Bn to fund the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Fred Schuster

With over 25 years of experience in the marketing industry, and a track record of successfully launching and scaling global entrepreneurial ventures within large complex organisations, such as McCann Worldgroup and Ogilvy Group, Fred uses his expertise to optimise market and content strategy via proven growth and delivery models.

Rachel Tuffney
Advisory Board Member
Rachel is a highly regarded International commercial leader with over 15 years of digital advertising & content experience gained in the world’s leading media organisations including WSJ and Dianomi from New York. Rachel has an extremely successful track record of delivering both profitable growth and deep commercial relationships with many of the world’s leading brands and their agencies.

Patrick Falconer
Advisory Board Member
Patrick is a dynamic, results-driven business leader with over 30 years of experience building and leading sales teams for international media brands including the International Herald Tribune, Fortune Magazine and The New York Times. He specialises in driving B2B advertising and sponsorship sales as well as bespoke content creation.

David McMurtrie
Advisory Board Member
David has spent his career working in media and technology companies including Scottish Television, MediaCom and DoubleClick. He spent 17 years working at Google UK, where he was responsible for developing partnerships with leading news organizations, driving their digital transformation and helping them thrive in an ever-evolving media landscape.
